Acoustic and Electroglottographic Study of Breathy and Modal Vowels as Produced by Heritage and Native Gujarati Speakers

چکیده
While all languages of the world use modal phonation, many also rely on other phonation types such as breathy or creaky voice. For example, Gujarati, an Indo-Aryan language, makes a distinction between breathy and modal phonation among consonants and vowels: /bɦaɾ/ ‘burden’, /baɾ/ ‘twelve’, and /ba̤ɾ/ ‘outside’ [1, 2]. This study, which is a replication and an extension of Khan [3], aims to determine the acoustic and articulatory parameters that distinguish breathy and modal vowels. The participants of this study are heritage and native Gujarati speakers. The materials consisted of 40 target words with the modal and breathy pairs of the three vowel qualities: /a/ vs /a̤/, /e/ vs /e̤/, and /o/ vs /o̤/. The participants uttered the words in the context of a sentence. Acoustic measurements such as H1-H2, H1-A1, harmonic-to-noise ratio and articulatory measurements such as contact quotient were calculated throughout the vowel duration. The results of the Smoothing Spline ANOVA analyses indicated that measures such as H1-A1, harmonic to noise ratio, and contact quotient distinguished modal and breathy vowels for native speakers. Heritage speakers also had a contrast between breathy and modal vowels, however the contrast is not as robust as that of native speakers.

The phonetics of contrastive phonation in Gujarati
The current study examines (near-)minimal pairs of breathy and modal phonation produced by ten native speakers of Gujarati in connected speech, across different vowel qualities and separated by nine equal timepoints of vowel duration. The results identify five spectral measures (i.e. H1–H2, H2–H4, H1–A1, H1–A2, H1–A3), four noise measures (i.e. cepstral peak prominence and three measures of har...
متن کاملBreathiness Contrasts in Consonants and Vowels: A Comparative Study of Gujarati and White Hmong
Only a small handful of languages are known to distinguish breathy and modal voice in both consonants and vowels. Two of these languages, Gujarati and White Hmong, boast CV sequences in which phonetic breathiness can be phonologically associated either with the consonant or with the vowel. Complicating matters, consonant breathiness is phonetically realized as a breathyvoiced aspirated release ...
متن کاملContrastive breathiness across consonants and vowels: A comparative study of Gujarati and White Hmong
Gujarati and White Hmong are among a small handful of languages known to maintain a phonemic contrast between breathy and modal voice across both obstruents and vowels. Given that breathiness on stop consonants is realized as a breathy-voiced aspirated release into the following vowel, how is consonant breathiness distinguished from vocalic breathiness, if at all? We examine acoustic and electr...
متن کاملPhonation Contrasts across Languages
This study compares the phonetics of phonation categories within and across four languages: Gujarati (modal, breathy), White Hmong (modal, breathy, creaky), Jalapa Mazatec (modal, breathy, creaky), and Southern Yi (tense, lax). In addition to acoustic measures in all four languages, electroglottographic measures were also compared for Gujarati, Hmong, and Yi. Several measures distinguished phon...
متن کاملThe timing and sequencing of coarticulated non-modal phonation in English and White Hmong
Despite the growing number of studies on the acoustics of non-modal phonation, little is known about how two distinct non-modal phonations can interact acoustically when coarticulated. This study investigates the acoustics of breathy-to-creaky phonation contours in vowels from a production study of native speakers of English and White Hmong. These languages differ in the nature of the non-modal...
